Plan meals from what’s in your kitchen with AI

Create a plan and shopping list while keeping observed items separate from guesses.

Before you start

A chat assistant and a written fictional pantry list; a ready-made one is filled into the sample prompt. A photo is optional and must be checked manually.

Why this lesson exists

In the post “Play With Your Food: The Kitchen Is an AI Classroom,” the kitchen becomes a friendly way to learn extraction, constraints and verification. The same pattern works for packing, supplies and household organization.

The idea this guide practices: Give AI the context it actually needs. Prefer a story? Read the comic Sodium Is the Final Boss.

Do the exercise

  1. Make an inventory

List items and quantities. If you use a photo, ask for an uncertain-items list and correct it yourself before planning. An image cannot reliably establish freshness or hidden ingredients.

  2. Give practical constraints

State available time, equipment, preferences and what must not be used. Use a small fictional meal plan for practice rather than seeking medical nutrition advice.

  3. Ask for a plan and a difference list

Request two simple options using the inventory. Separate what you already have from what must be purchased, including quantities and assumptions.

  4. Check the arithmetic

Trace every planned ingredient to the inventory or purchase list. Remove duplicates and check quantities yourself before acting.

Try it now with a ready-made sample

Everything is filled in. Copy it, paste it into your assistant and compare the answer with the checks below.

Using this inventory: 4 eggs, 1 onion, 1 can (400 g) chopped tomatoes, 500 g dried pasta, 200 g cheddar, 1 bag (200 g) spinach, half a bottle of olive oil, 4 slices of bread. Suggest two simple meal ideas for two adults within 30 minutes using a stovetop, one pot and one frying pan. Avoid nuts. Separate existing items, missing items and assumptions. Do not infer freshness or claim nutrition accuracy. Then produce a deduplicated shopping list.

Adapt it to your own task

Replace the bracketed parts with your own details.

Using this inventory: [items and quantities]. Suggest two simple meal ideas for [people] within [time] using [equipment]. Avoid [ingredients]. Separate existing items, missing items and assumptions. Do not infer freshness or claim nutrition accuracy. Then produce a deduplicated shopping list.

What this looks like

If one recipe uses two eggs and another uses three, an inventory of four eggs leaves one missing. A fluent recipe paragraph can still hide that arithmetic mistake.

Check your result

Use evidence from your output. A confident explanation from the AI is not enough.

If it isn’t working

Verify allergies, ingredient labels and food safety yourself. If the model invents ingredients you supposedly have, ask it to show the inventory line supporting each item.
