Learn AI tools by making one silly thing

Finish a tiny creative artifact and identify what each tool contributed.

Before you start

A chat assistant. Optional: an image or music generator you already have access to; some chat assistants can make images themselves. Spend nothing on the first pass.

Why this lesson exists

Patrick practiced connecting AI tools by making a deliberately unnecessary music video. The comic “Black Belt With Wi-Fi” tells that story. Low stakes make it easier to experiment, notice mistakes and actually finish. You will practice the same handoffs with something much smaller.

Do the exercise

  1. Choose something finishable

Pick a fictional cat detective poster, a four-line song or a one-screen game concept. Write who it is for and the one reaction you want. Stop the scope at one artifact.

  2. Write a human seed

Supply three details that are yours: a joke, a character trait and a constraint. Ask for three short concepts, choose one, and keep your original details visible.

  3. Hand the brief to a fresh tool

Take the creation brief the prompt produces (subject, tone, constraints and three checks). Paste only the brief into your image or music tool. If you only have the chat assistant, open a new chat so it cannot see the earlier conversation, then ask it to make the artifact from the brief alone. Anything the result gets wrong because the brief left it out is information you would need to add before ever connecting tools automatically.

  4. Review one failure

Compare the result to the brief. Correct one issue such as unclear subject or inconsistent costume. Save both attempts and a sentence explaining the change.

A prompt to adapt

Replace the bracketed parts with your own details.

Help me make [one tiny artifact] for [audience]. My three personal ingredients are [details]. Give three concepts, then wait for my choice. After that, produce a standalone creation brief with the subject, tone, constraints and three checks. Keep it achievable with tools I already have.

What this looks like

“A detective cat who solves missing-sock cases” is enough for one poster. A ten-episode animated series is a different project. The useful lesson is the handoff from idea to brief to reviewed output.

Check your result

Use evidence from your output. A confident explanation from the AI is not enough.

If it isn’t working

If the tool chain is taking longer than the artifact, do the next handoff manually. You are learning the workflow before building infrastructure.
